Modern drilling rigs generate large volumes of operational data, but there was no consistent format for presenting key metrics to well owners.
Existing industry reporting solutions were static and lacked the ability to interactively filter or explore data on demand.
Operators required flexible, ad-hoc analysis rather than fixed reports to understand drilling performance across different wells and parameters.
Delivering clear, customer-facing views of drilling performance was difficult due to the complexity and volume of high-frequency rig data.
Proven Solution
Spotfire was selected as the analytics platform to present drilling data through intuitive, interactive visualizations based on industry-defined key metrics, as well as more advanced aggregations and relationships.
Cadeon supported the initiative by enhancing existing visualizations, developing new analytical views, and designing efficient methods for connecting to and querying large volumes of underlying drilling data within the Spotfire environment.

High-Frequency Rig Data Ingestion
The solution was built primarily on Electronic Drilling Recorder (EDR) data captured at 10-second intervals, providing detailed visibility into rig operations.

Integration of Complementary Data Sources
Additional operational context was incorporated by integrating supporting datasets such as tour sheets, enriching the overall analysis.

Efficient Data Access and Query Design
Data was sourced using a combination of database views and parameter-driven stored procedures, enabling efficient querying of large datasets within Spotfire.

On-Demand Data Loading for Scale
To manage the volume of high-frequency data, datasets were incorporated into Spotfire as on-demand, allowing users to apply parameters that limited the amount of data returned at any given time.

Interactive, Customer-Facing Dashboards
Dashboards were designed to allow customers to move seamlessly from high-level drilling summaries to detailed performance metrics—such as tripping speed by driller—for specific wells and timeframes.

Our first engagement was focused on a strategic dash boarding Proof of Concept, with some deeper analytical aspirations for the future. This was a great 2-day Spotfire Advanced Training course that has taken my competency and proficiency using the tool to new levels. I highly recommend this course for those who are already familiar with using the basic features of Spotfire and even those who are at an intermediate level.

Really helpful. We have used Cadeon for Spotfire installs and updates which are particularly difficult. Even after decades of supporting this software we've run into issues. Recently after moving the spotfire database, for example, there was a small but significant change that held the process up. I was able to reach out (unplanned) and get it solved that afternoon with their help. This was huge. Business critical functions back online in no time.
